“Queen Eye” fashion expert Tan France is facing recent “mean girl” allegations head-on, specifically those suggesting that he pushed for the dismissal of his co-star Bobby Berk to land his friend Jeremiah Brent on the Netflix series.
The stylist on Friday took to Instagram to wave off claims made in a recent Rolling Stone article, detailing an alleged fallout between Berk and and some of the “Queer Eye” cast.
“My former colleague getting fired had nothing to do with me trying to get my friend hired,” France said in the brief video statement.
“Netflix and the production companies did a full on casting,” he continued. “I didn’t put my friend up for the job. They ended up getting it because they were the best person for the job. Am I so happy that they have the job? Uh huh. I really am. I think they’re going to be incredible on the show, but I didn’t get them hired by getting rid of somebody else.”
France went on to blame the rumors on unfounded tidbits “that just got reposted, reposted” on gossip blogs.
“So from the horse’s mouth: I’m telling you that that’s not at all how it went down,” he concluded. “And that’s all I’ll say on the matter. If you need to dig deeper, if you still don’t believe me, so be it — but that’s it.”
Back in November, Berk announced he’d be leaving Netflix’s revamped “Queer Eye” after eight seasons.
“It’s with a heavy heart that I announce that season 8 will be my final season on ‘Queer Eye,’” Berk wrote on social media. “It’s not been an easy decision to be at peace with, but a necessary one. Although my journey with ‘Queer Eye’ is over, my journey with you is not. You will be seeing more of me very soon.”
The streamer followed up with its own announcement late last month, revealing Brent would replace him as the Fab Five’s interior designer.
In a January interview with Vanity Fair, Berk revealed his decision to exit the series in part hinged on his belief that season 8 would collectively be the group’s last. He added that it came as a bit of a surprise to learn the rest of his castmates had decided to continue on for season 9.
The television personality also confirmed rumors something occurred between him and France, but did not provide further details.
“Tan and I had a moment,” he told the publication. “There was a situation, and that’s between Tan and I, and it has nothing to do with the show. It was something personal that had been brewing — and nothing romantic, just to clarify that.”
Then, the Rolling Stone article, published earlier this week, claimed Berk was “butting heads” with both France and Jonathan Van Ness. Three unnamed sources further claimed that France and food expert Antoni Porowski “campaigned to replace Berk with interior designer and friend Jeremiah Brent,” with one of them dubbing it “mean girl antics.”
